The 2012 campaign for 2nd district Congressman was very competitive and very spiritual. Two professed Christian businessmen, George Faught & Markwayne Mullin were seeking an open seat in congress. Mullin sought every advantage he could leverage and he believed that a self-imposed term limit of 6 years was a way to assure the voters that he would not become a typical Washington power broker.
Reporter Chris Casteel of the Daily Oklahoman reported this tactic and it's effectiveness to win the runoff against his Republican opponent. Mullin hoped that voters would forget that pledge, but in his 2016 challenge, he said "I am praying about what's best for my family and the 2nd district.". Does he really think God will suspend the eternal words of life and counsel him to commit a fraud? Does he think this will look to us like God almighty changed his mind? If a man appeals to you for political gain based upon how spiritual he is and how diligently he seeks God and is accountable to the savior of his soul, Then you should certainly demand that he fulfills his oft-repeated pledge. Because certainly a deeply spiritual man of God would have made his pledge after seeking the same council of God which led him to become a politician for God. |
How Do You Blame God For Your Own Lies? Mullin is trading in his integrity for a chance at political power. It will harm his reputation both in politics and in business.
Dr. Tom Coburn made a similar term limits pledge in 1994, and honored it in 2000, by not seeking another deceitful term. But Coburn then ran 4 years later for a more prestigious and influential role as a US Senator. The people trusted the word of Tom Coburn and he again beat the odds and served on his terms. Coburn used to hold the office currently entrusted to Mullin, but Coburn endorsed Jared Jackson just last Summer.

Mullin just received a reprimand from the Federal Election Commission because he was quietly trying to take campaign money from special interests and buying political favor with those same campaign dollars. They said he was acting illegally, unless he formally files a campaign for the 2018 race. So he did that, and by filing for the 2018 2nd District Congressional race, he is conspiring to break his clear vow not to attempt or run for the office.
But the spiritually obedient of the 2nd district have an opportunity to save Mullin from his sinful ways by supporting and voting for a more spiritually obedient and less corrupt alternative. Jared Jackson ran a very effective albeit underfunded race to defeat Mullin. I don't know who is going to run this time, but someone will. Unless there is a conservative alternative, the only other option is a General Election opponent. Mullin immediately went to work in Washington to curry favor with Speaker John Boehner. He rose to the office of Deputy Whip within a few years. Mullin has spent most of his time in office pushing the agenda of a failed Boehner leadership. The Supreme Court's 2015 landmark ObamaCare ruling determined that the Federal Exchange subsidies were constitutional only because the House leadership authorized the money to fund them. That authorization came from the John Boehner leadership and his team, including Markwayne Mullin. If you don't like Obamacare, you have Mullin to thank for twisting arms to get the deficit money approved and thus convince the SCOTUS that the illegal act was tacitly approved as statutory law.
