A rapid deployment force of the Metro police depts swiftly and peaceably restored order on the streets. We arrived just as a police tape had been tied into place.
Initially I was ordered back, but when I raised my left hand to show my Trump rally wrist band, the officer asked if I was seeking to get back in. I aid I prefer to provide press coverage from a safe distance. He pointed to a spot and I joined a small group of local & national media.
That's when I rolled the raw video you see posted, here.
The police know that I don't shy away from objective criticism of their actions when people are harmed. But they also know that I openly defend them against bigots who launch baseless attacks. I've sat in the room when they 'beat up on themselves' for situations they wish they had a chance to do over. They thoroughly analyze themselves so they can learn and be better peace officers.
After a while of observing while standing next to a corporal, I noticed the body language of the police riot squad was not overly aggressive, nor fearful of the situation. The corporal & I exchanged a very brief dialogue on the easing tensions, and I remarked on the body language I saw in his 'front line' officers. Officers need to be aware of this nonverbal form of expression and it's part of the training they get.
David Oldham of Constitutional Grounds joined me and we compared notes on the crowd. & the standoff. Oldham focuses on matters of constitutional rights. He gave law enforcement high marks for their commitment to order and liberty.
Note: I'm becoming a bit more trusted by metro area first responders; partly because I train them on Crisis Intervention techniques for successful de-escalation with people in psychotic distress.
Editor's Notes: We captured volumes of newsworthy information on the streets & in the rally. We're publishing as we are able, while recovering from heat, sun, exhaustion, & dehydration. We're also self-imposing quarantine, for the sake of our community. <br><br><img src="https://external-cdg2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/safe_image.php?d=AQAjYGomWNsL5_Sd&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.soonerpolitics.org%2Fuploads%2F1%2F6%2F2%2F2%2F16224166%2Fpolice-riot-squad_orig.jpg&_nc_hash=AQCl-sMskxKOZ-L4"><br>Late Saturday afternoon, a large group of loud protesters temporarily blocked off the main entrance to the Trump Rally. <div style="text-align: justify;">
Last Thursday evening at the Wagoner County Republican Fish Fry, Dr. Everett Piper was the keynote speaker. This is a portion of what he said;</div>
</div>
<div dir="auto">
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
<h2>
Words Do Mean Something</h2>
</blockquote>
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
<i> They have definitions. As thinking, moral agents, we intuitively know, for example, what the definition of "is" is, and we also know that changing and manipulating the meaning of words – turning them upside down – "is" called something; it "is" called lying. Lying about words and with words always brings ruin rather than reward. As the prophet Isaiah warned: "Woe unto him who calls evil good and good evil, darkness light and light darkness, bitter sweet and sweet bitter…" Words mean something, Dr. Everett Piper.</i><br /> </blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
His presentation gave rise to these thoughts. Our world operates on the written and spoken word. We communicate with words our thoughts, desires and emotions. Words are written down so others can read them and understand things. Words are very powerful and once spoken or written down can never be taken back. If you read James 3:1-8, you will see that even back then people knew the power of words. If words do not mean anything then nothing is sacred. </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a freshman legislator I had some expectations going into my first session because I had experience with the workings of our state from being a school board member and actively working with those in government. What I did not expect was the total abandonment of the words written in the Oklahoma State Constitution.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Below are the words from our State Constitution in regards to revenues. Revenues as defined by a simple search on the internet will get you this:the income of a government from taxation, excise duties, customs, or other sources, appropriated to the payment of the public expenses.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Section V-33: Revenue bills - Origination - Amendment - Limitations on passage - Effective date - Submission to voters.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A. All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives. The Senate may propose amendments</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
to revenue bills. B. No revenue bill shall be passed during the five last days of the session. C. Any revenue bill originating in the House of Representatives shall not become effective until it has been referred to the people of the state at the next general election held throughout the state and shall become effective and be in force when it has been approved by a majority of the votes cast on the measure at such election and not otherwise, except as otherwise provided in subsection</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
D of this section. D. Any revenue bill originating in the House of Representatives may become law without</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
being submitted to a vote of the people of the state if such bill receives the approval of three-fourths (3/4) of the membership of the House of Representatives and three-fourths (3/4) of the membership of the Senate and is submitted to the Governor for appropriate action. Any such revenue bill shall not be subject to the emergency measure provision authorized in Section 58 of this Article and shall not become effective and be in force until ninety days after it has been approved by the Legislature, and acted on by the Governor.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whether it is called a tax, fee, duty, tribute, custom, etc.., all are words that mean revenue. No bill should be passed in the last five days or final hours of the legislative session if the effect is revenue. It is not that hard to understand.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was amazing to see colleagues argue for fees, taxes and every other form of "revenue" but deny that it had anything to do with Article V of the Oklahoma Constitution. As Dr. Piper says, lying about words with words will bring ruin rather than reward. The ruin will be to our State Constitution. If the courts do not rule the recent revenue measures unconstitutional then we may as well throw the Oklahoma Constitution in the trash. The words of Article V will have no meaning.</div>

Vehicle purchases are already taxed with the excise tax. The excise tax is an "in lieu of" tax that replaces the sales tax. Legislators took the incredible and nearly unprecedented step of putting a sales tax on vehicle purchases without replacing the in lieu of tax. This means that there are now two taxes on cars: the first, an in lieu of tax known as the excise tax; the second is the sales tax which will now apply, notwithstanding the fact that the excise tax already applies and will continue to do so. <br />

<div class="paragraph"><font color="#8D2424"><em><strong>"It's a punitive proposal that lawmakers hope will take over $110 million away from Oklahoma car buyers."</strong></em><br />
<br />
It is also an illegal proposal in my view, because it did not have enough votes in the Legislature to comply with the important provision that requires a supermajority (75%) of legislative votes for revenue raisers. <br />
<br />
Lawmakers are daring the courts to throw out this illegal law. Doing so would create a 110 million dollar budget hole and some legislators appear to believe that the court will get the blame instead of the Legislature. <br />
<br />
I think the people of Oklahoma are much too intelligent for this ruse and they will appreciate the courts for saving them from the illegal new tax.<br />
<br />
Like House Bill 2433, Senate Bill 845 is also very dangerous in that it is clearly unconstitutional and will likely create a massive hole in the state budget, once it is rejected by the courts. <br />
<br />
Throughout the session, legislators attempted to pass a cigarette tax. They were never able to get the constitutionally required constitutional super-majority in both Houses. This new tax would have placed Oklahoma's rate so much higher than surrounding states that it would have potentially driven millions of dollars to other states with much lower tax rates.... - Jason Murphey</font></div>

Leadership was not willing to give up the perks and swag of their privilege. Their well-connected friends and former colleagues at the regents for Higher Education wanted to keep the $800 million pipeline of unaccountable money for pretty campus buildings.<br />

The Platform Caucus and associates in both houses were able to make their principled convictions clearly known by voting 'no' on the biggest offenders of the constitutional rules for revenue bills.<br />
